How can I tell if roaches are breeding inside or wandering in?
Look at size and timing. Small tan roaches in the kitchen, with egg capsules and droppings in the cabinets, mean German roaches are breeding indoors. One or two big dark roaches near a door or drain after rain usually came from outside. Breeding roaches need a cleanout; strays need sealing and perimeter work.
Try a simple test. Set one sticky trap under the sink and another behind the refrigerator for three nights. Several roaches of different sizes, including tiny nymphs, point to a breeding population. A single large adult points outdoors. Either way, save the trap for the technician.
Why don't foggers and store-bought sprays stop German roaches?
Foggers and contact sprays mostly hit roaches that are out in the open, a small share of the population. They do not reach eggs inside protected capsules, and repellent residue can push roaches deeper into walls and ruin bait. German roaches also breed faster than spraying alone can keep up with.
A female German roach carries her egg capsule until it is nearly ready to hatch, which shields the next generation from most sprays. A cleanout relies on bait the roaches eat and carry back, a growth regulator that stops young ones from breeding, and return visits timed to catch new hatchlings. Already sprayed? Say which product you used and where.
Do pier-and-beam houses and manufactured homes get more roaches?
They often see more outdoor roaches. The space under the floor stays shaded and damp, and plumbing runs from it straight up into the kitchen and bathroom. Gaps around those pipes work like roach highways. Sealing the penetrations and treating the crawlspace or skirting line usually cuts indoor sightings sharply.
Older frame houses around downtown Hawkins often have open crawlspaces, broken vent screens and joists close to damp soil. Manufactured homes have a fabric bottom board that tears with age, leaving a sheltered pocket under the floor. The report notes torn skirting, missing screens and open pipe chases.
Crawlspace moisture draws termites as well as roaches. Our guide to termites in pier-and-beam homes covers what to look for under the floor.
What should I do to get ready for a roach cleanout?
Clear out under the kitchen sink, wipe grease from the stove edges and range hood, and put open food in sealed containers. Get rid of cardboard boxes and paper sacks, where roaches hide and lay eggs. Then leave the bait alone: no spraying or wiping treated cracks until the technician says it is fine.
- Empty the cabinet under the sink and the one beside the stove
- Pull the refrigerator and stove out a few inches if you can do it safely
- Fix dripping faucets and leaks under the sink; water draws German roaches as much as food does
- Keep pet food in a lidded bin and pick up bowls overnight
